Our Mission

“We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love…And then we return home” – Indigenous Australian Proverb

Welcome to ‘We Are All Visitors’, or W.A.A.V., a social campaign designed to acknowledge and enrich a comprehensiveness of Indigenous Australian cultures, histories and communities present in the pan-regional films of Indigenous Cinema.

We, at W.A.A.V., understand the transcultural significance of finitely monocultural resources. Cross-cultural endeavours, respectively, translate implicit, dynamic understandings of Aboriginality for culturally foreign, ignorant or uneducated audiences. This, in effect, contests perfunctory, colonialist epitomes that denationalise Indigenous Australian Peoples to facilitate ethical, rather than aversive or obstructive, real-world ramifications on contemporary Indigenous issues.

Thus, ‘We Are All Visitors’ functions as an intercultural framework to mediate Indigenous Australian historical, social and cultural specificities in Indigenous Cinema, whether that be by virtue of elucidating relevant information in Indigenous Peoples’ culturally-specific storytelling traditions for culturally unfamiliar audiences, in order to drive meaningful, ethical responses through understanding, learning, growing and creating significant contributions towards Indigenous Australian Peoples.

NOTE: To ‘We Are All Visitors’, Indigenous Cinema, as a branch of the Australian National Cinema, is described as a broad collective of films from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective – or, in other words, the director’s vision – who is of Aboriginal descent and identifies as an Aboriginal Person.

  1. – One of my favorite quotes is from a Beatles song: “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other pl1.ns&#822a; It’s what I tell myself when I want to rush through the stage of 2am feedings, or all the carseats I have to buckle, or all the dirty fingerprints to clean off the table. Enjoy that baby kicking inside your belly; he will grow more quickly than you know. :)March 1, 2010 – 9:31 pm
